One of the stories I included in the events section for November 30 was the Brady Bill, which President Clinton signed into law on this day in 1993 and requires people who buy a gun to wait 5 days, I was happy to find this video to represent the story.
I had no idea Fareed had a show on CNN, here is an insightful discussion from November 23rd with Al Gore about Obama moving America forward and the upcoming challenges of the 44th presidency.
Dick Cheney is still alive? Well he was indicted, that's gotta mean something right?
Cheney is accused of investing some $85 million in the Vanguard group that houses federal inmates. The grand jury accuses Cheney and Alberto Gonzalez of engaging in organized criminal activity
Each day when I build the "Today in History" page on Mahalo I add the top stories from popular social news websites, for archiving purposes, could be interesting to read a year or two down the road. Here are November 17 stories.
Each day I build a "Today in History" archive at Mahalo.com and top it off with the historical Moments of Zen from The Daily Show. Here are November 17th
Here was a post I wanted to do last week, but with the whole "moving to a new city" ordeal it had to be moved back a little. This is a collection of how some prominent people reacted to the Obama right after it happened, enjoy!
First, the Young Turks is what I was watching, so this is what I saw, either way this is a real time reaction.
On November 5th the 43rd President, George W. Bush spoke about the Obama Victory.
Next is former Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Here is a little celebrity comment montage from CNN including an interview with Michael J Fox who is obviously excited at the prospect of Stem Cell research booting back up.
How about the Rap Community? Busta Rhymes perhaps?
How about the Sport Community? Here is Lebron James reaction.
Larry King had a whole show with Reactions the night after the Election, In this clip we see Bill Maher with his first reactions, following Bill is Magic Johnson.
Might as well continue with Part 2 of this special, in this clip - Michael Moore, More Jesse Jackson and believe it or not Pat Robertson...which gets cut off, don't worry Part 3 is below, but he mostly speaks about Palin.
Part 3, Once Robertson is done speaking King lands and interview with Martin Luther King III.
How about the Redneck reaction.
ah yes and how can I forget! the TDS Gang Reaction. First Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert announcing it.
Looking for videos for Mahalo to archive under the "Gulf War" term. And was happy to find this classic George Carlin clip, enjoy the Comedy.
of course, I embedded it far near the bottom of the page, in the Top 7 I put a more official and historical GHWB announcing the end of the war, I'm a professional here people.
Everyday I check out the major social websites and find the most popular links, I then document them in the Today in History pages on Mahalo, here are the top links for November 16.
Here is a fantastic video of a penguin being chased by a bunch of Killer Whales, I am not sure what the story but it looks like some nature photographers got into the middle of this chase.
I guess I've been bored from not mocking Sarah Palin since she lost the election, so time to dig up a gem. Remember how she believed GOD would help her bring more oil money to Alaska, well turns out GOD was taking his damn time so she decided to sue to the Government to have Polar Bears taken off the protected animals list, in order to turn nature preserves into industrial playgrounds. She even went on Glenn beck to argue her case.
So she's suing because polar bear numbers are increasing? Where is she getting that fact? Everything I have heard has been that the Arctic is shrinking and hurting the polar bear population. CBS or Glenn Beck? hmmm..
Regardless, The New Scientist magazine looked into the facts, Palin was right that Polar Bear populations were rising, but she spun the story to meet her needs, Populations are rising in North-East Canada, but are dropping Alaska.
The two populations that are increasing, both in north-eastern Canada, were severely reduced by hunting in the past and are recovering thanks to the protection they and their prey now enjoy.
The best-studied population, in Canada's western Hudson Bay, fell by 22% from 1194 animals in 1987 to 935 in 2004, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. A second group in the Beaufort Sea, off Alaska's north coast, is now experiencing the same pattern of reduced adult weights and cub survival as the Hudson Bay group.
Back in the day I used to share a Political blog with The Young Turks and Powerline (and others) I never got along with those Powerline fellas, they were hardcore Neo-cons who failed to recognize reality. I never cared to argue with them, but they blog by attacking, they even went as far as calling me a Bigot because I questioned the fact that the Bush Admin seemed to be hiring an abundance of Pat Robertson University graduates in his Justice Department (and we all know how well his Justice Dept. Turned out)
Powerline is back in the News, my Mahalo friend Lon linked to the insanity that is Neo-con lifers. Try Wrapping your head around this Powerline Quote...
Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.
*head explodes.
I love seeing my buddy Cenk whipping it to our ol' blogging college.
Looks like Bill Maher will be on break for a couple months, tis a shame, but life will go on. Here is the opening monologue from the November 14 show.
Bill Maher spoke with Sean "Diddy" Combs about Barack Obama's safety and other random topics.
Finally the panel, today we have John Meacham who is the editor of Newsweek Magazine, Kelso from "That 70's Show" aka Ashton Kutcher, and Republican congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. They talk about the collapse and division of the Republican Party. However Ros-Lehtinen argues that John McCain actually ran a good campaign. Also Maher touches on the Bailout and when he mentions Reuben Jeffery III, he is referring to this article written by Naomi Klein in the Rolling Stone.
Gun Sales are up thanks to Barack winning the presidency, check out this quote from the Toronto Star.
MIDLOTHIAN, Va.–When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?
That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop yesterday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun, one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.
Pretty Incredible that an elected congressman is already comparing Obama to Hitler, they fight dirty on the right wing of the world, this is fearmongering slander at its worst. From NPR.
Talking with the Associated Press on Monday, Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said he's got concerns President-elect Barack Obama will lead the nation toward some kind of Gestapo-like Marxist dictatorship — this in apparent ignorance of the fact Nazism and Marxism were at odds during the Second World War.
He's still at large, as I updated the Osama Bin Laden page I found this AFP report from September that I think is a pretty decent video to have featured at the top of our Archive.
Honestly, I think he's dead, in fact before Benazir Bhutto was murdered she told Sir David Frost that he was dead, which is interesting, but still I guess we all want to see the body. What do you think, Bush will find him before January 20th? or Obama will find him after he takes office? He's gotta be out there, in this day and age this shouldn't be that difficult.
Watch Bhutto mention this at 2:29 into this interesting clip, I wonder why Frost didn't follow up on that statement, did he assume she mispoke? she did lean into the answer, hmmm, either way, unfortunately we'll never have another chance to hear her elaborate on this, as we all know, she was assassinated in late 2007.
Well, the Move was excellent, Karen and I are now unpacked and back online from our new home in Qualicum Beach, BC.
I sat down today and started working on Today in History at Mahalo.com, from now on I will be spending more time "rabbit holing" the internal links I link to in the Date Pages and making sure those pages are up-to-date and presentable on Mahalo.
For Example, Today I linked to the United Nations Page, which had several dead links and videos. So I ventured out to find a great clip that is worth being archived under that term that will help our users. I ran into this hilarious clip from Ex-Daily Show correspondent Rob Corrdry.
Edit: So I'm in the middle of the move now, won't have new posts until about November 14-15th
Later this month I am moving to Qualicum Beach BC, this will be my 8th move since I left home for College in 2000, that includes 5 different towns in three different provinces. Slowly I have gone from east to west inching myself towards the mountains and the sea. This next address is one that I hope will be my home for a long time. I can't wait to move in with Karen and our family of pets.
Only thanks to working from home has this dream come true. A few years ago I couldn't even imagine a move to such such a beautiful, remote location. If I stayed in Ontario I might still be labouring at a computer screen in some downtown office building, pushing numbers for some company that dictates my hours, along with 1,000 co-workers. Now I can work from home, at a computer from my back yard, working my own hours on a project I have a real passion for...Archiving, specifically Link archiving, which is why I love working at Mahalo, what a great place build timless works of media mashup art. So my blogging will be sporadic at best for next couple weeks, once we're all settled in, it will be back to blogging and back to archiving gems..you'know, Internet Labour.
South park is the cartoon on television, end of discussion. They're legacy will probably last longer then that of the Simpsons and Family guy, I am not sure how they do it, but they keep getting funnier, every year. The November 5 edition was an instant classic picking up exactly where the November 4 election night left off.
Naturally, McCain and Obama were in cahoots, thus begins the Ocean's 11 themed South Park episode.
Obviously, Sarah Palin is much smarter then she appears.
Of course, after the heist is complete, Obama decides to stick around and give this president thing a shot.
Mahalo Archive is collecting news clippings about the event, if you have any, feel free to recommend them.
I would love to add more, but I'm crazy busy with moving these days, embedding these clips is the only way I can watch these days because of region blocking issues.
Stewart, Colbert parody election in real-time By JAKE COYLE AP Entertainment Writer
NEW YORK (AP) -- Culminating their satirical coverage of the campaign, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert teamed up for a live one-hour comedy special - though Stewart had his Cronkite moment, too.
Stewart became the first comedian to announce presidential election results on live national television.
Sensing the end was imminent, the broadcast delayed its signoff for a moment, as offstage producers gave the closing cue while hovering over TV monitors showing. When they said the election had been called, the comedians effectively became newsmen.
Interrupting a Colbert writhing in mock disappointment at John McCain's loss, a clearly moved Stewart announced: "I would just like to say, if I may ... that at 11 o'clock at night, Eastern Standard Time, the president of the United States is Barack Obama."
It was a straight line on a broadcast full of parody.
Sitting at "The Daily Show" desk - expanded for the two anchors - Stewart and Colbert mocked over-the-top election coverage with fake reports from campaign headquarters and real updates on polling numbers.
"We don't normally do this live. We are a fake news show," Stewart told the crowd beforehand, putting emphasis on "fake."
But "The Daily Show" for years now has been regarded as a legitimate news source. Stewart's take on the news has been influential enough to draw visits from both McCain and Obama. "The Colbert Report" host infused himself into the race by briefly - and comically - running in the South Carolina primary.
The two comedians - Stewart himself, Colbert in his right-wing pundit persona - reacted to the night's news like a Democrat and Republican, respectively. Most of the gags went to Colbert.
Repeatedly, Stewart called the night a historic one, only to have Colbert each time correct that it was "AN historic" evening.
A desperate Colbert attempted distraction with a cockatoo, scoffed at blue states like Vermont and pleaded that McCain's win in South Carolina was "this year's bonus state" - tripling its electoral tally.
"Daily Show" correspondents pitched in, too, including a video interviewing voters prodding for evidence of the so-called Bradley Effect.
But comedy eventually subsided to the magnitude of the election results. After the broadcast - held in front of a raucous and partisan crowd - the cast exchanged hugs and Colbert and Stewart both went to the audience to embrace their wives.
In a brief interview after the broadcast backstage, Colbert was still rattled.
"I've never had this feeling before, which is: Things went well on Election Night," said Colbert, whose political views are not his character's. "I'm a little stunned. I don't know what to do with my happiness. I'm still afraid someone's going to take it away."
In the nearly two-year long presidential campaign, comedy was the unqualified winner, mirroring the candidates and the media every step of the way to great popularity. Like NBC's "Saturday Night Live," "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" each enjoyed record ratings and increased relevance.
The exit of the Bush administration, some have argued, will dwindle comedic fodder. But Tuesday night's show ended with Stewart rallying his correspondents and Colbert that their jobs would continue.
"There was a world out there before this election and there's still a world out there," Stewart said.
Afterward, Colbert, too, said the show would go on.
"It's like saying nighttime news will go out of business tomorrow," said a grinning Colbert. "Do you think that's gonna happen?"
Wondering if Indecision 2008 will be posted tonight, I am not sure, but here are some exclusive behind the scenes interviews from The Daily Show Correspondents.
