Mahalo Sports Vertical Newsletter #2
Posted by Unknown | Thursday, January 28, 2010 | Mahalo, MSp Newsletter | 0 comments »Right off the bat, I'd like to welcome the new members of the list, we now have 33 of you! And a special thanks to all those who make an appearance in the chat be it daily or periodically, remember it's IRC room "mahalosports" - I'm not there 24hrs a day, but pretty damn close. For the new guys, the chat makes it easier for me to answer your questions and walk you through the process and for the vets it helps me get you tasks you want to build, and get requested pages assigned to you immediately, no waiting for requests to be approved internally.
Anyway, the business at hand today, I'd like to congratulate this time around @mbalshin_93, @Corcoran25, @Rangersman, and @matt_carter for reaching the first milestone of 10 tasks, you now fall under the veteran category within Mahalo Sports *clapclap*. I hope some of your pages are starting to collect a wee bit of rev-share coming in, it will seem small at the beginning, but believe me, patience is key. One of these days this newsletter will be devoted to enhancing pages and promoting pages individually and as a group, with 33 three of us we can do some real damage on the net. But we are still just getting started, there is much ground to cover first, we are practically rebuilding the Mahalo sports department from scratch.
After 10 tasks you'll notice my assignments to you will slow down if not stop, it's because I am working with newer trainees, this doesn't mean there is nothing for you to do. Feel free to pop into chat if you have suggestions for assignments and/or please pick up any unclaimed sports task from the Public list I update DAILY within the Sports Vertical (bookmark that link, better yet make it your loadup page:) This goes for you Vets too, I'll be seeding it with more and more sports related tasks as we get rolling here.
I also want to congratulate @Justimko and @fphlip9 from our Sports Vertical for both earning their way onto the Mahalo How-To team this week. They each completed a "Rush Week" How-To Training task and were two of the 15 people selected to join the team this week. @Justimko was one of the 4 to win a M$25 bonus, for his entry was How To become a Hockey Goalie. Very well deserved. Rush Week Tasks are available to anybody who is not already on the How-To team, and our Sports Department need a good solid group of How-To writers, there are hundreds if not thousands of page building possibilities, plus it provides you with another option if your bored of the short 300 word tasks.
If you are not on the How-To team, and you would like to give it a shot, I have posted a small list of RUSH WEEK How-To's within our vertical home. You are not limited to these, if you have an idea for a page, email it to me or catch me in the chat (there's that chat being mentioned again.)
For Justimko, fphlip and all the other veterans who are already on the How-To Team, you are now eligible to work on the "Bulk-How-To-Project" - This is an assignment where you receive a bulk list of 25 Sport How-To's worth M$8. You can send me a list of ones you want to build, and if you can't think of 25, I can top off your list from my own collection. It's good to have a solid base of How-To's under your belt, you never know when one will take off. For example - How to Become a Sports Agent - earned it's manager over 300 bucks since June 09. The exciting part of Mahalo is the potential of a M$3 or M$8 dollar task done today to end up earning you M$300 down the road. These add up and you see how people make full time work out it, but it takes time, patience and skills, that is why I am here to help.
So there you have it, Newsletter #2 in the books, I'm going to start archiving these Newsletters Online so the new guys can catch up on old ones. You can find them archived here.

Mahalo Sports Vertical Newsletter #1
Posted by Unknown | Thursday, January 28, 2010 | Mahalo, MSp Newsletter | 0 comments »Hello all, welcome to the first edition of the Mahalo Sports Newsletter.
You are on this list either because you
A) Approached me showing interest through Mahalo, or
B) Are a new Sports Writer who contacted me off site.
Currently this list has 30 members, it's a good number to start, but I intend on growing it.
Getting to know me
If you contacted me through Mahalo you probably know who I am, but for the new guys out there a little bit of history about myself. I've been with Mahalo since their first year of 2007, I started off by writing Serps (search engine results page), got bumped up to a full time guide position in 2008, moved on as the Community of Mahalo Answers and grew that for a year, and just a couple weeks ago I took the Vertical Manager position for Sports. I've worked for four years online previously with Netscape, AOL News and True/Slant publications, I live in Qualicum Beach BC with my fiance where I am currently training to be a part-time firemen. It's only been a couple of weeks as Sports VM, so I've been spending most of my time organizing the vertical and strategizing on a plan on how we pump some life into this long neglected corner of Mahalo.
The Trainees
For the Mahalo vets who may have thought I forgot about them, I'm happy to report that I have been spending a great amount of time with the newer writers working them through Tasks. I believe the best method of learning and understanding the fundamentals of building a Mahalo Serp (search engine result page,) is by diving in and completing tasks. This training so far has gone extremely well and I am proud to say 2 writers have reached the goal of 10 tasks already - @fphlip9 and @justimko, there are few of you dangling close and I can't wait to see you get past 10. Once a new writer reaches 10 tasks, not only do I send them a nice little bonus, but it will also open the door to the more lucrative Mahalo projects.
Project for the Vets
Speaking of lucrative projects, if any of the Veteran Mahaloians on this list, who have been admitted to the How-To team are interested in writing Sports How-To's we are working on a "Bulk Task Project" - If you think you can complete 25 Sports Related How-To's (Worth M$8 each) in six weeks, please contact me. New writers you can also participate in this project, only after you get admitted onto the "How-To" team. You can learn how to do that here.

The Olympics
Lucky me, starting the Sports department under a month before these games begin. Many of our trainees have been building key Olympic pages and if we are lucky they will rank in search engines before the Olympics begin. We are about half-way there on the event list. I have been using these for trainees, but I'm ready to open them to the vets. If you are interested in building and maintaining Olympic Event pages, please let me know.
What is a sports department without the big 4? Currently Mahalo has a team page for each team, but all of them are crap. They were all built back in 2007 and have received little to no maintenance since. My top priority after the Olympics, will be to assign and fix these pages. From the business side of things, only a miracle would ever get these pages to rank well in search engines, and as of today none of these pages earn more then a couple bucks a month. The plan is overhaul the entire "Team Page" formula.
So, if you are a MAJOR fan of a big 4 team, I need to know as soon as possible so I can assign you a team page, nothing needs to be done just yet, but after the Olympics, a major update will need to be done to your page and there will be at least a dozen tasks related to your team that we are going to build. For starters I am only going to assign 2 team pages per person, so contact me with your top choices, first come, first serve :)
Odds and Ends
Just a reminder, especially to the trainees who are noticing the "Pages Managed" tab for the first time in their profile. Page "Views" is a feature that does not currently work on your pages, if you are looking at a bunch of zeroes, I can assure you people are visiting your pages. If you are a stat junkie (and I hope you are) The best feature to take advantage of is connecting your Mahalo account with Google Analytics, this way you can track views and where your traffic is coming from.

Also, be sure to bookmark the Mahalo Sports Vertical homepage, here I will be posting tasks that are available for anybody new or old to claim. The most important bit you'll read is my emphasis on joining the Mahalo IRC Chat room, this is where I and other members of the sports department hang out while we are working on the site, the more participants the merrier. If you have any questions about HOW to login to the chat, please respond to this email and i will be more then willing to explain. However, this page explains a great deal. http://www.mahalo.com/mahalo-
So there you have it, the first Mahalo Sports Newsletter. Naturally, I would love to hear your responses, thoughts, teams and observations, drop me a line anytime.

Australian Open 2010
Posted by Unknown | Friday, January 22, 2010 | Australian Open, Tennis | 0 comments »@Mithrandir has been doing round-by-round coverage of the 2010 Australian Open
The first round started with a big surprise, as Maria Sharapova lost her first round match against unseeded Maria Kirilenko. Except for Sharapova all female top 16 seeded players moved to the second round.http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/players/index.html#women8
Day six of the Australian Open proved to have some surprising results. The day saw two matches between Belgium and Russia. While unseeded Justine Henin continued to win with a difficult match against Alisa Kleibanova, her fellow countrywoman Kim Clijsters didn't stand a chance against her russian opponent Nadia Petrova. Clijsters only scored one game, losing 0-6, 1-6.
Earlier on the day, Jelena Jankovic was surprisingly eliminated by currently world ranked 30, Alona Bondarenko with clear numbers: 6-2 6-3
After a tough match in round two, Juan Martin del Potro had again a troublesome match in round three. After a 2,5 hour match, he managed to beat Florian Mayer 6-3 0-6 6-4 7-5.
Philipp Kohlschreiber gave Rafael Nadal quite some trouble. Nadal thought he had the match 'in the bag' after winning the first two sets, but Kohlschreiber won the third, and managed to keep up in the fourth. In the end, Nadal won the fourth set 5-7, leading to a four-set win: 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 5-7.
Watch Olympic Hockey Online
Posted by Unknown | Wednesday, January 20, 2010 | Hockey, Olympics | 0 comments »
Video highlights of all mens and womens 2010 Olympics hockey can be found on CTVOlympics.cahttp://www.ctvolympics.ca/2 and NBCOlympics.com.http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/index.html3 CTV has gone as far to saying they will stream "every second" of the Olympics on their website.http://www.ctvolympics.ca/news-centre/newsid=25567.html4 Both sites will also contain interviews of mens and womens hockey players and highlights of the medal ceremonies . It also important to note that NBC did in fact broadcast the 2008 Summer Olympics live on their site but have yet to make an announcement regarding the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.
You don't see many highlights out of the ECHL, but here is one for you from Victoria BC. Three Salmon Kings - Dick Southern, Scott Howes and Adam Taylor just undress the Bakersfield Condors defense on this play, earned themselves the January 15 highlight of the night on TSN.
I am the newly appointed manager of the Sports Vertical on Mahalo, in the upcoming days/weeks/months we'll be looking for a new crop of writers to help really blow out this vertical, if interesting by all means contact me on Mahalo.com. During these early days we are really going to be pumping out the Olympic pages.
This was also the ref who made the allegations against Shane Doan being racist, he doesn't sound like a true professional. If you watch the calls he made against Burrows you would probably take Burrow's side.
Well, he finally admitted it! Mark McGwire did indeed take steroids back in 1998 when he broke Maris' record.
Be sure to not miss the 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremony in Vancouver BC!
